Day 1 – Sunday, April 23 – Overnight Flight

Dramatic landscapes, enormous sand dunes, untamed scenery, winding coastlines and remarkable wildlife come together on your amazing journey. For those on our international group flight, we leave JFK this morning and fly overnight.

Day 2 – Monday, April 24 – Arrive Windhoek – Tour Begins

Welcome to Windhoek, Namibia.  We arrive this morning.  After clearing customs and immigration formalities you will be met and transferred by private vehicle to the Windhoek Hotel & Country Club.

Windhoek is Namibia’s capital, home to an international airport and a plethora of restaurants, shops, entertainment venues and accommodation options. The city is clean, safe and well-organized, with a colonial legacy that is reflected in its many German eateries and shops, and the widespread use of the German language. Windhoek has an interesting mix of historical architecture and modern buildings.  Today will be a free day for rest and relaxation.  For those who want to venture out, local sights include the Alte Feste (Old Fort), the 1896 Christuskirche (Christ Church), and the more contemporary Supreme Court.

Dinner is included.

Day 3-5 – Tuesday, April 25 to Thursday, April 27 – Windhoek – Sossusvlei

Just after breakfast on Day 3, we will transfer to Sossusvlei (5 – 6 hour drive).  Sossusvlei is where you will find the iconic red sand dunes of the Namib.  The clear blue skies contrast with the giant red sand dunes to make this one of the natural wonders of Africa and a photographer’s heaven.

Over the next two days, enjoy nature drives, guided scenic nature walks to view the desert’s fascinating flora and fauna, stargazing and visits to Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon.  We’ll experience celebrated sights including Dune 45, Hiddenvlei, Big Daddy and Deadvlei.  Other attractions in the area include the Namib-Naukluft National Park, where the mountains of the Namib meet its plains.

Optional activities abound at our reserve including hot air ballooning, guided quad biking or a visit to a desert winery (fees apply for optional activities).

A water hole in front of the main building gives the opportunity to see gemsbok (oryx), springbok, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, ostrich and jackal.

Our lodge, the Kulala Desert Lodge is the closest to Sossusvlei.  Situated at the foot of the majestic Sossusvlei dunes, our lodge offers a private entrance to Namib Naukluft Park while magnificent views of its famous red dunes, mountainous scenery and vast open plains make it the most spectacular.

The camp comprises 23 thatched and canvas “kulalas” with en-suite bathrooms and verandas. Each unit is built on a wooden platform to catch the cooling breezes and a flat rooftop where for those who want to experience nature at its finest, bedrolls are placed for guests to sleep under a blanket of stars. The main area, with northern African-inspired décor, has a lounge, dining area, pool, and wraparound veranda overlooking a waterhole.

This lodge includes breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, a fully inclusive drink package (local brands) and complimentary laundry facilities.   

Day 5 – Thursday, April 27 – Sossusvlei – Swakopmund

This morning, we’ll enjoy sunrise at the giant red sand dunes.  After breakfast, we will head to Swakopmund, the adventure capitol of Namibia (5 – 6 hour drive).  Founded in 1892 as the main harbor for German South West Africa, Swakopmund is often described as being more German than Germany. Now a seaside resort, Swakopmund is the capital of the Skeleton Coast tourism area and has plenty to offer to its visitors. The quirky mix of German and Namibian influences, colonial-era buildings and the cool sea breeze make it a very popular destination.

The Hansa Hotel is an iconic place that forms part of Swakopmund’s architectural culture and is said to be one of the oldest buildings in the town. It is ideally situated in the center of Swakopmund within easy walking distance of town and the beach. The luxury of the hotel, its excellent cuisine and friendly service are well known locally and internationally.

Breakfast and dinner are included.

Day 6 – Friday, April 28 – Swakopmund

This morning we’ll embark on a 3-hour Dolphin and Seal boat trip, departing from Walvis Bay (weather permitting) which provides a wonderful opportunity to explore this beautiful bay and coastline. The cruise takes in the Oyster Platforms, where we learn about the oysters cultivated here and get to taste these delicacies.  Next, we move on to Pelican Point to see the lighthouse and an area in which three species of dolphins may be encountered, namely the rare endemic Heaviside’s dolphin, dusky and Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. We’ll look for diverse pelagic (ocean-going) birdlife, pelicans, flamingo, and Cape fur seals.  Massive sunfish, leatherback turtles, southern right and humpback whales can also be seen in season.

Following our cruise, enjoy a great seafood lunch on the beach.

This afternoon we’ll be taken on a scenic flight over Sossusvlei to view the giant sand dunes from above.  We continue along the Skeleton Coast to view some of the many shipwrecks down below.

Day 7 – 10 – Saturday, April 29 to Tuesday, May 2 – Swakopmund – Damaraland

After breakfast, we will leave Swakopmund and travel to Damaraland by our private vehicle (5 – 6 hour drive).

Huge, untamed and ruggedly beautiful Damaraland is an exceptionally scenic landscape of open plains and spectacular rock formations. The major attractions are Spitzkoppe, the Brandberg, Twyfelfontein, Vingerklip and the Petrified Forest.

During the next three days, there will be many activities available.  We’ll have an opportunity to explore the local area in game drive vehicles and on foot, combining a luxury safari experience with economic empowerment for the local community. We’ll visit cultural villages, enjoy stargazing and discover the environment on nature walks.  We will see a Petrified Forest and have a picnic in one of the many scenic areas surrounding our camp.

We’ll view petroglyphs – prehistoric rock engravings – and San rock art at Twyfelfontein, Namibia’s first World Heritage Site. The combination of Africa’s past and present makes Doro Nawas a fascinating visit.

Game viewing is not abundant, however those to look out for include the desert-adapted elephant, gemsbok (oryx), kudu, springbok, ostrick and other species.  Black rhino and Hartmann’s mountain zebra are occasionally seen.  Excellent birdlife may be spotted.

Doro Nawas Camp rests on the slopes of a small hill on the edge of the dry Aba-Huab River overlooking ancient plains with glorious views of the rugged Damaraland area. We will be housed in some of the 16 natural walled units, the design and décor blending in with the surrounding scenery. Each unit consists of a bedroom, en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower, and veranda for stargazing or sleep-outs under the skies. There are indoor and outdoor dining areas, a residential pool area and a small curio shop.

Day 10 – 13 – Tuesday, May 2 to Friday, May 5 – Damaraland – Etosha National Park

This morning, we leave Damaraland with our private vehicle and journey to Etosha National Park, where we’ll spend the next three days.(4.5 – 5 hour drive).

The Etosha National Park is Namibia’s premiere game viewing experience, situated in the northwest of Namibia and is an area well known for its wildlife.  Each morning and again each afternoon, we’ll venture out in our 4 x 4 vehicles on game drives to see the animals that live in this habitat.  Be on the lookout for desert elephants, lion, cheetah, rhino, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and desert adapted species such as oryx and springbok.

Vegetation ranges from dense bush to open plains, attracting a diversity of wildlife. In the heart of the park is The Etosha Pan – a shallow depression that covers an area of 5000 square kilometers.  Dry and shimmering for most of the year, the pans fill up with water after good rains to a depth which is seldom deeper than one meter.  In the dry season, wildlife is attracted to perennial springs and waterholes that make for excellent game viewing.

We’ll be staying at Mushara Lodge.  Located only 8 kilometers from the Von Lindequist Gate on the eastern outskirts of the Etosha National Park, Mushara Lodge is ideally situated for visiting the park.

The name Mushara derives from the Purple Pod Terminalia tree, which grows in abundance in the lodge grounds and the surrounding area. The thatched public area consists of a small library with a selection of good books, a bar with an extensive wine cellar, airy lounge with welcoming fireplace for cooler evenings, a dining area and well stocked curio shop.

Day 13 – Friday, May 5 – Etosha National Park – Windhoek

This morning we will be transferred by private vehicle to Windhoek Airport and the end of our amazing journey (6 – 6.5 hour drive).  Those on our group flight will fly to Johannesburg and on to JFK.

Day 14 – Saturday, May 6 – Arrive USA

We’ll touch down in the USA this morning.

Cancellation Policy: From the time of deposit until July 31, 2016, there is a $250 penalty for cancellation. From August 1 – November 30, 2016, the cancellation penalty is $850. From December 1, 2016 – January 17, 2017, the cancellation penalty is 25% of the tour price. From January 18 – February 17, 2017, the cancellation penalty is 50% of the tour price. From February 18, 2017 until the day of travel, the cancellation penalty is 100% of the total package price. Cancellations made on the day of departure and “no-shows” will receive no refund.  There is no refund in the event of interruption or cancellation by the passenger after the start of the journey.

Taxes, Service Charges, Government Fees and Gratuities: All taxes, service charges and government fees have been included in the cost of the tour package and airline tickets. Gratuities have been included on this itinerary for included features.  They include tips for drivers and guides, safari guides, tour manager, servers for included meals, and baggage handling in and out of each hotel. Taxes, service charges and government fees are subject to change.

Flights and Transfers: International airfare and transfers are not included in the tour rate.

Passport and Visa Requirements: A valid passport is required for travel to Namibia.  It must have at least 6 months validity beyond the last date of travel. At this time, a visa is not required for entrance into Namibia or South Africa for US, Canadian, UK or Australian citizens. Please note that visa requirements may change at any time and it is up to the passenger to be aware of these requirements. All passengers must have a minimum of 4 blank VISA pages in their passport to enable an entry stamp to be issued. Two pages for South Africa must be facing each other. Page must state the word “visa” and not “endorsement” at the top of the page.   No photos are necessary.
