Easter Island & Santiago Post-Cruise (4 night package)

Sunday, January 5 – San Antonio – Santiago de Chile

Our ship arrives this morning at the pier in San Antonio, Chile.  We’ll depart the cruise ship terminal and drive 90 minutes to the heart of Santiago.  Discover Chile’s capital city that combines colonial buildings with ultramodern architecture. We’ll start with a walking tour of central Santiago. Take a short walk to the Governmental Palace, La Moneda and Constitution Square. Head over to the oldest street in Santiago, New York Street, and visit the commercial center of the city. Afterwards, continue towards the “Plaza de Armas” with all the history of Santiago.  This area provides insight into this important and historic place. Observe the Mapuche Monument, Santiago Post Office, City Hall, the National Historical Museum, as well as enter the Santiago Cathedral featuring some of the best architecture in the city. Then we’ll visit the famous Central Market, which is the main market for fresh fish and seafood, an interesting building, dating back to the end of the 19th century: It is a steel construction, built in London and brought to Chile by ship. Continue to San Cristobal Hill and enjoy the finest panoramic views of Santiago and the Andes Mountains.  We’ll arrive at the Bellavista District for lunch on your own.

In the early evening, we’ll offer an option and head to Bario Lastaria (pay your way for transportation and dinner), the Bohemian part of town. Lastarria is a historical neighborhood in Central Santiago. If the old buildings and artist hideaways of large European cities charm you, Lastarria, is an excellent place to spend an afternoon or evening. The main street through the area is called Jose Victorino Lastarria, and is packed with artisanal cafes and mid-to-high end restaurants. The numerous smaller streets branching off have more shops, bars, and eye-catching street art. Close to the Alameda entrance to Lastarria, on the left side of the street, is a crowded patio adorned with fountains and coverings. Here, you can easily access cuisine from traditional Chilean, to local craft beers, to fine sushi.

Monday, January 6 – Santiago de Chile – Easter Island

This morning, enjoy a buffet breakfast at the hotel before we head to the airport for our morning flight to Easter Island. After our 5 hour flight across the Pacific to the most remote island in the world, we’ll arrive on Easter Island. We’ll transfer to our luxurious Eco lodge hotel where you will have the rest of the day at leisure to enjoy this property and our surroundings.  Dinner is on your own tonight.  At approximately 8:00 this evening, we’ll drive to the Ceremonial Center of Tahai and enjoy a lovely sunset with the Moai as a breathtaking background.  (B)

Tuesday, January 7 – Easter Island

After a buffet breakfast at our hotel, we’ll drive to the south coast and visit representative examples of platforms which have not been restored, Ahus Vaihu in  the bay of Hanga Te’e, and Akahanga, where legend has it that the famous King Hotu Matua was buried. Proceed to Rano Raraku, a quarry of almost 900 stone statues, 397 of them still lying or standing at the slopes of the extinct volcano and crater lake.

Next, we’ll visit Ahu Tongariki (restored with 15 Moais), most recent and biggest restauration on the island. After, we’ll take you to the east coast and visit Ahu Te Pito Kura and the “Navel of the World”. Last but not least visit the beach of Anakena with its restored Ahus Nau Nau and Ature Huke. There you will have the opportunity to enjoy the warm Pacific Ocean. Later, we’ll return to the hotel. (B, L)

Wednesday, January 8 – Easter Island

Drive up the extinct volcano Rano Kau where, on the way, enjoy a view over the whole island and see its distinct geological features.  Here, we’ll proceed to an outlook at the crater lake. Afterwards drive to the Ceremonial Village of Orongo, where the birdman competition took place and you can see the spectacular petroglyphs related to this culture.  Enjoy the breathtaking view towards the three islets Motu Nui, Motu Iti and Motu Kao Kao opposite the coast. Drive down again to Ahu Vinapu, an unrestored platform and for some, still proof of the influence of pre-inca arquitects in Easter Island culture. Our last stop of the day is Ana Kai Tangata cave with paintings (only from the exterior, visit depends on weather conditions).

Later, we’ll drive to the restored Ahu Akivi with 7 Moais, built in the middle of the island. The legend tells us that these statues are representing the 7 explorers who were sent to Rapa Nui by the King Hotu Matua. Proceed to the unrestored Ahu Hanga Poukura. Then visit the topknot-quarry Puna Pau with its red scoria stone where all the Pukaos were made. At the end of the trip you will visit the ceremonial site Tahai, close to the village of Hanga Roa.

This evening, sit back and enjoy an authentic Rapa Nui Cultural Show complete with dinner.  This program is focused on visitors to Rapa Nui who want to experience Rapa Nui culture in an interactive, didactic manner, together with a Rapa Nui family sharing anecdotes, history and legends. All this will be presented in the native Rapa Nui language and translated into English. (B, D)

Thursday, January 9 – Easter Island – Santiago – Tour Ends

Early this morning, we’ll depart our hotel to enjoy sunrise over the Moai. We will drive to Ahu Tongariki and enjoy the sunrise behind the restored Moais at the Bay of Hanga Nui. After the sunrise in Tongariki we’ll go back to the hotel to have  breakfast and gather our luggage.  Soon after, it will be time to leave for the airport for our 5 hour flight back to Santiago.  From Santiago, you’ll take your late evening international flight home. Monday, January 6 – Santiago de Chile – Tour Ends

This morning, enjoy a buffet breakfast at the hotel. Spend the day as you wish before your flight home.  Most flights are in the evening.

Cancellation Policy for Cruise and Post-Cruise Packages: Prior to August 1, 2019, there is a $100 penalty for cancellation. From August 2 – September 12, 2019, the cancellation penalty is the amount of the deposit for the cruise and post-cruise packages. From September 13 – October 17, 2019, the cancellation penalty is 50% of the total cruise/package price. From October 18 – November 19, 2019, the cancellation penalty is 75% of the total cruise/package price. Cancellations made on November 20, 2019 or after and “no-shows” will receive no refund.  There is no refund in the event of interruption or cancellation by the passenger after the start of the trip.

Travel Protection: Amazing Journeys recommends you purchase Travel Protection. Information will be sent with your trip confirmation.

Proof of Citizenship: All passengers must present a valid passport (valid for six months beyond the last date of travel) to board the vessel. Depending upon from which country you hold a passport, you may be required to pay visa or reciprocal fees to the governments of Argentina and Chile.  At this time, Australians are required to pay a fee.  There is a departure tax in Chile which is often included in the cost of your airline ticket (but not always).  More information will be sent to you as we move closer to the travel date. Passengers should check on visa requirements and fees from their home country.  All visa and reciprocity fee information and rates may change from time-to-time.  It is up to the individual traveler to know the most current rules before traveling.

Dining Preference: Late Dining has been reserved for our group on this sailing.  In addition to the main restaurant, there are several specialty restaurants (fees apply), a buffet and room service.

Port Taxes, Fuel Surcharges, Government Fees and Gratuities: Port taxes, government fees and gratuities have all been included in the rate and are subject to change.  Should oil costs go above $65 per barrel, and the cruise line adds fees, Amazing Journeys reserves the right to add these fees to the cost of the package.  The cost will be no more than $10 per guest per day.

Air: Airfare has not been included in the cruise rates. Roundtrip airfare has been included in the post-cruise package to Easter Island. It is important that you not purchase airfare until you receive a confirmation letter which will contain specific flight parameters. All passengers will fly into Buenos Aires (EZE or AEP) and out of Santiago, Chile (SCL).

Transfers: Information on optional transfers to and from the ship will be sent closer to the sailing date.
