Alaskan Cruise – Dance Adventure
- August 28 – September 4, 2016
- Starting from $1559
Join Ari Levitt, dance instructor for Roll Up The Rug & Dance, and other fellow dancers for a week of exploring Alaska and fun dance classes! You will be treated like royalty aboard Princess Cruises Ruby Princess as you glide amongst vast glaciers and scenic fjords. Imagine your sense of wonder as you gaze toward the first sight of a cresting whale or how your spirits will soar when an eagle flies over head. The week is specifically designed for dancers who not only want to experience the beauty and splendor of Alaska, but who would love to do so in the company of a fun group of like-minded fellow dancers and travel adventurers!
Time in port will be spent exploring the scenic cities of Alaska, while time onboard will be spent relaxing, making new friends and dancing! Dance classes will be selected from a list of the most popular social dance styles being done today (swing, foxtrot, waltz, ballroom, blues, Latin, WCS, NC2S, etc). As in all of Ari’s workshops, each class session will not only introduce some fun new steps and combinations, but will emphasis those elements of lead/follow connection and effortless partnering that make dancing so joyful and rewarding.
You’ll meet people from all over the USA and abroad, form great memories, and make lasting connections. We’ll have games, mixers, special discussions, and plenty of non-dancing social activities planned, with lots of room for spontaneity, improvisation, and your input in our activities. As for dancing, classes will move swiftly, and we’ll really be able to take advantage of the many opportunities the ship provides for music and dance, all this while at play with a fun group of fellow dance enthusiasts!
Come in a day or two early to relax, sightsee in Seattle and join us for community wide social dance events. Click here for more details on our Seattle pre-cruise.

What is the typical day’s dance schedule? Dance workshops will take place from 10am-noon during the two days at sea, and on the morning when we don’t dock until the 7pm. The schedule will allow you to fully take advantage of all of the ship’s activities and amenities during the rest of the day. There will be plenty of music and dancing in the afternoons and evenings, as well as opportunities for more informal gatherings and “tune-up” lessons.
What kinds of dance classes will be offered? Specific workshops topics will be decided closer to the sailing date (and on the ship) in order to best tailor the lessons to the group’s abilities and interests. Styles will be selected from among swing, latin (salsa, cha cha, merengue, rhumba), ballroom (waltz, foxtrot, etc), night club 2-step, 1-step, blues, and fusion. We can be fairly flexible with how all of this is set up.
Will there be opportunities for private lessons? Yes, these can be arranged individually with Ari onboard the ship or beforehand by email.
What level will the dance classes be geared toward and what will be their focus. Group classes will be geared toward the adv-beginner/intermediate level dancer (ie: you should be comfortable with beginning level dance steps, connection, and framework, and be ready to move forward from there). If you still consider yourself a novice dancer, not to worry. You have plenty of time between now and August to sign up for some local partner dance classes and get ramped up! (I would recommend classes in swing, salsa, latin, or ballroom, although just about any kind of social partner dance would be fine).
The class format will be very much geared toward fun, playful social partner dancing, which is to say that we will not be focussing on performance choreography, competition styling, or line-dancing. In each workshop, we’ll start by laying the groundwork for strong partnering foundations, imparting a clear understanding of how connection, framework, and energy can be utilized to create playful movement and improvisations, and reviewing basic steps and combinations. On top of this we build a wide-ranging repertoire of fun moves and variations.

Wednesday, August 31 – Tracy Arm Fjord and Juneau
Tracy Arm Fjord (Scenic Cruising) – Arrive at 5 am, depart at 9 am – Breathtaking Tracy Arm extends over 30 miles long, with nearly a quarter of its area covered in ice. In fact, it encompasses some of Alaska’s largest glaciers, including the twin Sawyer glaciers, which often expel enormous chunks of ice into the waters below in a magnificent process known as calving. Icebergs float along the surface of the glistening water in an array of sizes, from just a few inches up to three stories wide. Protected within the Tongass National Forest, Tracy Arm Fjord is a haven for wildlife. Black and brown bears, deer, wolves, harbor seals, mountain goats and a variety of seabirds have been spotted in the area. As you glide through the pristine fjord, you’ll first pass by a lush forest where a number of beautiful waterfalls cascade down, and then you’ll be treated to views of snowcapped mountains and blue-tinged glaciers more spectacular than you could ever imagine. Later this morning, you’ll have the opportunity to learn a new dance or two!
Juneau – Arrive at 12:30 pm, depart at 10 pm – Come face-to-face with the impressive Mendenhall Glacier up close, go whale watching or take a helicopter tour and walk on a glacier. Juneau is famous not only for gold and government but also for its breathtakingly beautiful glaciers and stunning views of both water and mountains. Join us this evening for music and drinks at the Red Dog Saloon.
Thursday, September 1 – Skagway, Alaska
Arrive at 6 am, depart at 5 pm – Skagway was the gateway to the gold fields for the thousands who flocked to Alaska and the Yukon with the hope of striking it rich. Today, the frontier spirit is alive and well in this Gold Rush town. Join us as we mountain bike in the mountains of the Yukon Territory, stopping to look at beautiful scenery along the way. Join us on a hike with beautiful snowcapped mountains as our backdrop, or take a train ride to learn about the history of the gold rush. Tonight, we’ll meet back onboard the ship for some great pre-dinner dancing.
Friday, September 2 – At Sea
Cruising – Our cruise ship offers so many options to relax and indulge and today is your opportunity to do just that! Participate in one of the onboard dance classes, exercise in the gym, read a book as you watch the world go by from our ship, look for whales and eagles flying overhead. Later, join together for another dance class with Ari! Tonight, enjoy pre-dinner dancing, a group dinner and entertainment galore, whether a musical production, late night comedy or dancing the night away in the club at the top of the ship.
Saturday, September 3 – Victoria, British Columbia
Arrive at 7 pm, depart at 11:59 pm – On our last day before returning home, spend the day enjoying all that the ship has to offer. Today we’ll offer our last dance workshop and have an opportunity to come together as a group as we wrap up our week together. Tonight, enjoy an evening in beautiful Victoria. Victoria exudes old-world charm and fragrant and colorful flowers are everywhere. The harbors, especially Inner Harbour, are dotted with pleasure craft, ferries and floatplanes. The city is renowned for its beautiful gardens, charming houses and very British feel. Take a stroll, enjoy dinner in town or relax at an “Old English Pub.”
Sunday, September 4 – Seattle, Washington
