Canada & New England Dance Cruise
- October 15-20, 2017
- Starting from $1049
Join Ari Levitt, dance instructor for Roll Up The Rug & Dance for five days of exploring Canada & New England! You will be treated like royalty aboard Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas as you travel along the coast of New England. The five-night cruise is specifically designed for dancers who not only want to experience the beauty and splendor of Canada & New England, but who would love to do so in the company of a fun group of like-minded fellow dancers and travel adventurers!
Time in port will be spent exploring the scenic cities of Canada & New England, while time onboard will be spent relaxing, making new friends and dancing! Group classes on the ship will include a mix of morning and/or afternoon sessions in a variety of dance styles (swing, social, ballroom, Latin, blues, fusion, WCS, tango, etc.), with a strong focus on both partnering & connection, as well as introducing new step patterns and stylings.
You’ll meet people from all over the country, form great memories and make lasting connections. We’ll have games, mixers, special discussions, and plenty of non-dancing social activities planned with lots of room for spontaneity and improvisation. As for dancing, classes will move swiftly, and we’ll really be able to take advantage of the many opportunities the ship provides for music and dance, all this while at play with a fun group of fellow dance enthusiasts!

What is the typical day’s dance schedule? Dance workshops will take place from 10am-noon during the day at sea. The schedule will allow you to fully take advantage of all of the ship’s activities and amenities during the rest of the day. There will be plenty of music and dancing in the afternoons and evenings, as well as opportunities for more informal gatherings and “tune-up” lessons.
What kinds of dance classes will be offered? Specific workshop topics will be decided closer to the sailing date (and on the ship) in order to best tailor the lessons to the group’s abilities and interests. Styles will be selected from among swing, latin (salsa, cha cha, merengue, rhumba), ballroom (waltz, foxtrot, etc), night club 2-step, 1-step, blues, and fusion. We can be fairly flexible with how all of this is set up.
Will there be opportunities for private lessons? Yes, these can be arranged individually with Ari onboard the ship or beforehand by email.
What level will the dance classes be geared toward and what will be their focus? Group classes will be geared toward the advanced-beginner/intermediate level dancer (ie: you should be comfortable with beginning level dance steps, connection, and framework, and be ready to move forward from there). If you still consider yourself a novice dancer, not to worry. You have plenty of time between now and October to sign up for some local partner dance classes and get ramped up! (I would recommend classes in swing, salsa, latin, or ballroom, although just about any kind of social partner dance would be fine).
The class format will be very much geared toward fun, playful social partner dancing, which is to say that we will not be focussing on performance choreography, competition styling, or line-dancing. In each workshop, we’ll start by laying the groundwork for strong partnering foundations, imparting a clear understanding of how connection, framework, and energy can be utilized to create playful movement and improvisations, and reviewing basic steps and combinations. On top of this we build a wide-ranging repertoire of fun moves and variations.

Sunday, October 15 – Boston, Massachusetts
Depart 4 pm – Today we board our ship, Serenade of the Seas, for a week of majestic beauty, enjoying dance and the company of a great group of fellow travelers! Tonight, we’ll get started with a group gathering, followed by dinner and dancing.
Monday, October 16 – Bar Harbor, Maine
Arrive 8 am, depart 6 pm – Nestled on the east side of Mt. Desert Island and surrounded by Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor features some of the most spectacular scenery on the Eastern Seaboard. The rock-bound coast, soaring granite cliffs, majestic mountains and blue waters have attracted the Rockefellers, Astors, and Vanderbilts for over 200 years, and continue to enchant visitors today. Visitors can walk the streets of town, relax on the Village Green or climb Cadillac Mountain to see the natural grandeur.
Tuesday, October 17 – St. John, New Brunswick
Arrive at 7 am, depart at 3:30 pm – St. John is the only city on the shore of the Bay of Fundy, home to the world’s highest tides. Canada’s oldest incorporated city, St. John is a popular destination known for its historic uptown streetscapes, cultural attractions and natural wonders. Popular sights include the Reversing Rapids where the Bay collides with the St. John River, the City Market with local vendors and artisans, the New Brunswick Museum and the trails and beauty of Rockwood Park. This evening, join others from the group for dinner, dancing and an evening of fun back on the ship.
Wednesday, October 18 – Halifax, Nova Scotia
Arrive at 11 am, depart at 8 pm – It’s big enough to be the economic and cultural capital of Eastern Canada but small enough to be easygoing and hospitable. Halifax residents have it good as the city is located on one of the planet’s great natural harbors and adorned with landmarks like the Citadel fortress, Pier 21 (Canada’s Ellis Island), and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Outside the city, cruise visitors can discover the weatherbeaten landscape of Nova Scotia’s south shore. See craggy coastlines, the bouldered topography of Peggy’s Cove and the German village of Lunenburg, so meticulously restored it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Thursday, October 19 – At Sea
Cruising – Our cruise ship offers so many options to relax and indulge and today is your opportunity to do just that! Participate in our onboard dance classes, exercise in the gym or read a book as you watch the world go by from our ship. Tonight, enjoy pre-dinner dancing, a group dinner and entertainment galore, whether a musical production, late night comedy or dancing the night away.
Friday, October 20 – Boston, Massachusetts
Arrive at 7 am – We say good-bye to our friends this morning as we head for home with amazing memories of a beautiful cruise in Canada & New England.
