After a group breakfast, we’ll have a Group Welcome and Orientation. Beijing delights and fascinates with its glittering skyscrapers, bicycle-filled streets, stark Mao-commissioned public buildings and glorious imperial palaces. Take in the astonishingly large Tiananmen Square, the world’s biggest public square, and visit the mysterious, walled Forbidden City, the vast ensemble of palaces and chambers that was home to 24 of China’s emperors over the course of 500 years. Other highlights on our tour today include the enchanting Summer Palace, whose sublime, 300-acre gardens and pools provided imperial families with cool summer refuge from the city’s heat. Enjoy dinner at our hotel tonight, followed by an AJ favorite – a Chinese foot massage! (B, L, D)

Today will be a highlight of your tour: a visit to the Great Wall of China, probably the world’s greatest man-made wonder. Built over 2,600 years ago, this 5,500-mile edifice traces China’s northern borders and makes a breathtaking sight. Walk along the ramparts and absorb the far-reaching views of northern China’s mountains as you hear about the wall’s incredible history. After lunch, continue to the Sacred Way, a road believed to have provided China’s emperors with a route to heaven after death. Admire the marble statues of animals and humans that line the path, known as the ‘Divine Way’. Finish your explorations with photo stops at Beijing’s iconic 2008 Olympic Bird’s Nest Stadium and Water Cube Aquatics Center. (B, L)

Thursday, May 23 – Xian
China’s former capital of Xian stands at the start point of the ancient Silk Road and is famed for its magnificent Terracotta Warriors.
