We will arrive at our hotel mid-day, allowing free time to wander the streets around our centrally located hotel, take in one of the many fascinating museums Ho Chi Minh has to offer, enjoy lunch at a place of your choosing or shop. This evening is free to enjoy the sights and sounds of this busy cosmopolitan city. (B)
Tuesday, December 30 – Saigon
This morning, we discover the city’s colonial legacy including the famous Dong Khoi area, Nguyen Hue walking street, Hotel de Ville (City Hall) and home to the legendary Continental Hotel, made famous by Graham Greene, “the Quiet American.” This area is filled with popular restaurants, bars and boutiques. Weave through back alleys and meet some of the locals who live in small houses in space-starved Saigon. After, we’ll visit the Art Museum. The next stop will be at the Emperor of Jade Pagoda and a coffee shop on Nguyen Hue Street that was once used as a safe haven and a weapon chamber during the Vietnam War. After lunch at a local restaurant, we continue the drive along a man-made canal that was an important waterway linking Saigon and the Mekong Delta for over 200 years. Nowadays, with the quick development of roads, goods and produce are mostly shipped by truck. However, we can still see boats from the Mekong Delta arriving loaded with agricultural products and returning with consumer goods. We will take you around the vibrant bustle of Saigon’s streets to Ho Thi Ky Market. Enjoy a short walking tour through the busy stalls, where we’ll witness the lively energy of the local flower trade and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and scents of this beloved Saigon landmark.
As the year starts to wind down, the bustling city of Saigon begins to wind up a two-day celebration. Beginning tonight, the streets around Nguyen Hue Walking Street become center stage for DJ’s, dancing in the street and an all-out party atmosphere. (B, L)
