Day 1 – Sunday, December 16 – Arrival New Delhi, India – Tour Begins
Arrive at Delhi International Airport in the late evening/midnight. After clearing customs and formalities, our Amazing Journeys representative will greet you and transfer to you to our hotel.
Welcome to India’s capital city. Contemporary Delhi is a bustling metropolis, which successfully combines the ancient with the modern. It was a magnet which drew the Mongols, Turks, Persians, Afghans, Mughals and the British, all of whom contributed to its glorious but turbulent past. Today, the twin cities of Old and New Delhi still intrigue Indians and tourists alike as the cultural and political capital of the largest democracy in the world.
Day 2 – Monday, December 17 – Old and New Delhi
This morning we meet our Indian Tour Manager at our Amazing Journeys Orientation. Then we hit the road for a full day of touring to Old Delhi and New Delhi. Experience a ride on cycle rickshaw in bustling narrow lanes through Chandni Chowk – the central shopping district of Old Delhi. Visit Raj Ghat – the cremation site of Mahatma Gandhi. In New Delhi, make a photo stop at India Gate – a memorial raised in honor of the Indian soldiers martyred during the Afghan War and drive along Parliament House, Secretarial Buildings and the Presidential Palace. After lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll show you a different side to India. In addition to her history, culture & traditions, India is also famous for their film industry, popularly known as “Bollywood”. India movies have received international fame where music & dance are the highlights. We’ll participate in a workshop and find your hidden talent as we learn to dance Bollywood style! Our evening will end with a group dinner. (B, L, D)
Day 3 – Tuesday, December 18 – Delhi – Agra
After breakfast and check-out from our hotel, we’ll drive to Humayun Tomb which was constructed in the 16th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a precursor to the Taj Mahal. We’ll continue to drive to Agra (approximately 4.5 hours). The Mughals, besides being great rulers, were also grand builders and they preserved their best architectural wonders for Agra and its surrounding neighborhoods. The area has many wonderful monuments and the Taj Mahal, the greatest of them all, is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture at its best. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This afternoon we’ll visit the most famous monument in all of India – the Taj Mahal, a mausoleum and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Taking 22 years and 20,000 men to build, the white marble was quarried 200 miles away and was transported to the site by a fleet of 1000 elephants. It is widely considered as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and stands as a symbol of eternal love. The Taj Mahal is the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Islamic and Indian architecture. Tonight we’ll enjoy a group dinner at our hotel. (B, L, D)
Day 4 – Wednesday, December 19 – Agra – Jaipur
After breakfast we’ll check out of the hotel and visit Agra Fort, built in the 16th century. This fortress is made of red sandstone and is known as the Red Fort of Agra, which encompasses the Imperial City of the Mughal rulers.
We continue our tour and drive to Jaipur, known as The City of Victory (approximately 6.5 hours), located in the state of Rajastan. Jaipur was founded in 1727 and is the only city in the world symbolizing the nine divisions of the Universe through nine rectangular sectors sub-dividing it. The city was painted pink in 1853 in honor a visit by Prince Albert of England and many parts remain that way today. Except for the busy traffic seen today by bicycles, cars and buses, little seems to have changed.
This evening, we’ll enjoy a home hosted dinner. This is the time to know more about Indian family life and values. We’ll dress like the locals with the ladies wearing Indian Sarees, bangles and a bindi, while the gents will be given the traditional dress, Kurta-Paizama. (B, L, D)
Day 5 – Thursday, December 20 – Jaipur
After an early breakfast, we’ll take an excursion to the magnificent and palatial Amber Fort, located on a hill top. We’ll ride a jeep to ascend the fort, where we’ll learn about the history of the structure and the people during this time in history. We’ll return to the city and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
Next, we’ll stop for a photo opportunity at Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, a façade with 953 windows! It’s one of the most photographed monuments of Rajasthan. Our next visit is to the City Palace, also known as the Maharaja’s Palace, covering an area equal to one seventh of the entire city! We’ll also visit Janter-Manter, an astronomical observatory. Later, we’ll take a walk through colorful buzzing local markets and have some time to visit a few of the shops as Jaipur is a shopper’s paradise. We’ll return to our hotel for a group dinner. (B, L, D)
