Thursday, July 2 – Ponta Delgada
Welcome to the Azores, the Gem of the Atlantic. Get to know your fellow travelers at our Welcome Event, followed by a walking tour of Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azores, as we stroll through cobbled streets lined with unique black-and-white mosaic sidewalks and volcanic black and white stone buildings, setting the Azores apart from other architecture. Wander past historic churches and charming cafés. Visit the iconic Portas da Cidade gates, stroll through Gonçalo Velho Square, admire the elegant São Sebastião Church, and meander through the local market. Enjoy a special visit to the Sahar Hassamain Synagogue, built in 1836, and the more modern Hebrew Museum, all in the restored synagogue and the only remaining synagogue in the Azores. Tonight, we’ll enjoy a Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant. (D)
Friday, July 3 – Ponta Delgada
Wind your way from Ponta Delgada through lush countryside, coastal villages, and take in sweeping ocean views. Enjoy the scenery as we drive along the south side of the island to Vila Franca do Campo, once the island’s capital and the most important settlement in the Azores until 1522, when it was destroyed by a violent earthquake. Stroll through the village where you can see the 15th century church which boasts the oldest bell on the island, and taste the well-known Azorian pastries, queijadas da vila.
Continue to Furnas Valley, a historically active volcanic valley which embraces a small village, and the impressive Lagoa das Furnas. See dozens of hot springs, or fumaroles, dotting the landscape. These gaping holes of boiling mineral waters emerge from the ground, gasping and hissing and emitting a sulfurous, iron-laced vapor. See the famous Furnas stew (cozido) being slowly cooked underground by natural geothermal heat, a stew with mixed meats and vegetables. This delicacy will be our lunch!
Nestled in the Furnas Valley, Terra Nostra Garden is a tropical oasis famed for its warm, iron-rich thermal pool. Surrounded by towering ferns, exotic flowers, and centuries-old trees, this natural geothermal bath invites you to slip into waters heated by volcanic springs — a soothing experience unlike any other. Wander the garden’s winding paths and discover one of Europe’s most beautiful botanical collections.
Tucked into the rolling green hills of São Miguel’s north coast, Gorreana is Europe’s oldest tea plantation, and the only one still producing tea today. The humid and rainy climate, mild temperatures, and acidic volcanic soil have enabled the production of high-quality green and black tea. See the rolling tea fields overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Taste fresh teas and savor the taste of Azorean heritage, enjoying a sip of history surrounded by breathtaking island scenery.
This evening, join together for our Amazing Journeys Shabbat, followed by dinner at a local restaurant. (B, L, D)
Saturday, July 4 – Ponta Delgada
We’re in for a treat today as a jeep tour through Nordeste will take us off the beaten path, through winding forest trails, stunning waterfalls, panoramic views of the sparkling sea, and small villages surrounded by hydrangea-lined hills. Visit Povoação, a historic town that holds special significance as the first part of the island to be settled, offering a glimpse into the island’s rich heritage. Feel the thrill of discovery as we cover terrain and uncover some of the island’s most breathtaking coastal vistas. Nordeste by jeep is experiencing São Miguel at its most untouched and spectacular.
This evening is free to enjoy Ponta Delgada by night and enjoy local cuisine from a variety of restaurants in the largest city of the Azores. (B, L)
Sunday, July 5 – Ponta Delgada – Pico
Discover the Azores’ sweetest secret – the island’s famous pineapples. Grown slowly in volcanic soil and sheltered for nearly two years, these fruits are prized for their intense flavor and aroma. Wander through the greenhouses, learn about the unique, labor-intensive cultivation process, and sample pineapple products right on-site. A visit to a São Miguel pineapple plantation offers a delicious taste of Azorean tradition and tropical charm.
One of the Azores’ most iconic landscapes, Sete Cidades is a vast volcanic crater filled with twin lakes – one blue, one green – surrounded by emerald hills and hydrangea-lined trails. From the breathtaking Vista do Rei viewpoint, gaze across this natural masterpiece where legend says two lovers’ tears formed the lakes. Descend into the crater for a stop at the village. Continue exploring the island passing by several small villages such as Ajuda da Bretanha, Santa Bárbara, Santo António and Capelas.
This afternoon we will take a short flight to Pico Island. This evening is at leisure to explore this enjoyable seaside town and our beautiful hotel. (B)
Monday, July 6 – Pico
Dominated by Portugal’s highest peak, Mount Pico, this volcanic island is a paradise with its surreal lava fields, mountain’s summit and rolling vineyards. This morning we’ll explore the small villages and hamlets of Pico Island, from Cabeço do Chão to São Roque, including Cachorro, the famous rock formation in the shape of a dog’s head.
No visit to Pico would be complete without a visit to the vineyards where we’ll sample local wine made from centuries-old traditions.
View Lagoa do Capitão, a serene mountain lake set against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Pico, one of the island’s most photogenic spots. Continue down to Lajes do Pico, once the heart of the Azorean whaling industry, to visit the Whale Museum and learn of the island’s seafaring past.
This afternoon we’ll take a leisurely hike on the Vinhas da Criação Velha trail (approximately 4 miles on mostly flat terrain) as we wind through Pico’s UNESCO-listed landscape, where centuries-old vineyards grow between dark basalt walls that protect the vines from Atlantic winds. On this hike, you’ll pass lava fields, ocean viewpoints with islets, see the Moinho do Frade windmill (used for grain milling) and elements associated with vine culture such as rola-pipas (carved slopes to enable the sliding of the wine barrels to the boats), relheiras (tracks left by the wheels of the ox carts), shelter houses, wine cellars, tide wells, and more.
After a full day, we’ll return to our hotel for an evening at leisure. (B, L)
Tuesday, July 7 – Pico – Faial
This morning we will take a ferry to visit our third island, Faial, known for its landscape hewn by volcanic activity and tectonic forces. We’ll head toward Espalamaca with sweeping views of the harbor, and along the mountain road overlooking the Valley of Flamengos, dotted with traditional farms and hydrangea-lined lanes. Bear witness to the volcanic activity that has taken place here as we explore the volcanic complex of Capelo. Take time meandering in the volcano and the ash-covered terrain, and see the rocky coast and Capelinhos, site of the last volcanic eruption in the Azores. Set at the foot of the volcano, spend time at the Interpretation Center which tells the incredible story of Faial’s 1957-58 eruption, when the island literally grew from the sea
After our visit, we’ll take the ferry back to Pico and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. (B, L, D)
Wednesday, July 8 – Pico – Ponta Delgada
This morning is yours to spend how you’d like – enjoy time at our hotel & spa, explore Pico, or – for our wildlife seekers – partake in an optional whale watching excursion at the best site in the Azores (additional fee). Learn about the different species of dolphins and whales in this area, their lifestyles, diet, and observation of cetaceans in the Azores. After, board your boat with our lookouts, skippers and biologists, in search of these majestic creatures. Located on the three tectonic plates of the world in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and benefiting from the Gulf Stream, the Azores are a permanent home or site of passage for more than a third of the species of whales and dolphins in the world. Sperm whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Risso’s dolphins reside here year-round. Other species visit or pass through them during specific seasons. Summer is the best time to see Atlantic spotted dolphins, pilot whales and striped dolphins.
This afternoon we’ll take our short flight back to São Miguel Island. Tonight, join your fellow travelers for our Amazing Journeys Farewell, followed by dinner at a local restaurant for our last taste of Azorean cuisine. (B, D)
