Tonight, we’ll gather together as a group for dinner at a popular restaurant, overlooking the marina, featuring traditional Icelandic cuisine. (D)
Tuesday, June 3
No visit to Iceland is complete without a visit to the geothermal lagoons, and we will visit the luxurious Sky Lagoon with its infinity pool that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy the 7-step Skjol Ritual, including a swim in the lagoon’s warm geothermal waters, a cold plunge, a calming sauna, a body scrub, and more.
This afternoon, get to know more about the Icelandic lifestyle by embarking on a Foodie Tour. We’ll sample local delicacies at well-known ‘must-visit restaurants,’ family-run businesses and secret local hangouts. We’ll see why Icelanders are proud of their local food by focusing on the most delicious traditional cuisines – from modern flavors to comfort foods to a fine dining version of Icelandic classics; we’ll be immersed in the Icelandic food scene. This evening, enjoy some free time exploring Reykjavik. (B, L)
Wednesday, June 4
We’ll head out of the city and travel to one of Iceland’s highlights, the Golden Circle. Experience a diverse set of landscapes, natural wonders and places of interest within a relatively small region. Visit UNESCO World Heritage Site Þingvellir National Park, a geological phenomenon and the most important historical site in Iceland, where the world’s first Parliament was founded in 930AD. Next, we’ll learn the age-old method of Geyser Bread baking using geothermal heat and taste the delicious results.
Enjoy a farm-to-table lunch at a family-run farm where they raise cattle and horses. We will learn about Icelandic dairy farming and products made in Efstidalur. Meet the family and taste their fresh products like skyr, feta cheese, whey and ice cream.
Next, spend time at Geysir Hot Springs and witness the erupting geyser and spouting hot springs in Haukadalur. Visit one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls as you watch thousands of tons of icy water thunder majestically down in a double-fall into a deep gorge at thundering Gullfoss Waterfall.
Dinner tonight is a unique food experience where we’ll dine in a Wine Room at a tomato farm where tomatoes are grown inside a greenhouse. (B, L, D)
Thursday, June 5
Today’s journey begins by driving through the western part of the South Coast, visiting some of the most cherished and famous treasures Iceland has to offer. Powerful waterfalls, the thundering ocean and the charming countryside are the main attractions of this day. We’ll don headlamps as we walk though Lava Tunnels where we will explore the geological history of the area and see how the powerful volcanic activity shaped this region.
At Seljalandsfoss, a picturesque waterfall that can be fully encircled, the water flows from a volcano and drops about 200 feet over an ancient sea cliff into a pool. Walk along the footpath behind the waterfall at the bottom of the cliff to feel the mist on your skin and listen to the roar of the rushing water.
We will continue along the South Coast as we visit Dyrhólaey and its lighthouse, literally translated to “door hill island”, a 400-foot-high promontory named from the massive arch that the sea has eroded from the headland. One of Iceland’s daredevils even flew a small airplane through the archway. Dyrhólaey is also famous for its birdlife – keep your eyes out for fulmars, kittiwakes, gulls and of course, puffins.
Next, visit Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, featuring an amazing cliff of basalt columns resembling a rocky step pyramid called Gardar. According to folklore, two trolls attempted to drag a ship to land but were turned to stone as daylight broke, turning them into the Reynisdrangar stacks – spectacularly shaped basalt sea stacks. During summer, the area has rich birdlife including puffins, fulmars and guillemots.
This evening spend time in the quaint village of Vik, known for its Icelandic hospitality, where you will have free time for dinner. Later, we’ll drive to our boutique hotel, further up the Southern coast with the midnight-sun lighting the way, allowing you to witness the dramatic landscape. (B, L)
Friday, June 6
Today is truly an amazing day as we will don drysuits and kayak among the glaciers in Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The spellbinding glacial landscape and calm waters will make you feel like you have been transported into a fantasy world. Our guides will lead us around the glacier and in between icebergs to admire these natural wonders from a perspective that can only be seen while on the water (no previous kayaking experience needed). This area is also full of birdlife, especially during summer, where you may see the arctic tern and several other birds.
Take in the beauty and walk along the spectacular Diamond Beach with its stranded ice chunks that resemble diamonds, contrasting with the black sand, glistening in the sun.
This afternoon, visit Skaftafell National Park and choose between two hike options – an easy hike to the Skaftafell Glacier to explore the glacier lagoon area, or a moderate hike through the stunning Svartifoss Waterfall, “black waterfall”, with its unique shape and dark basalt columns. Along with our local guides, we will be amazed by the 360˚ views all around.
We’ll come together this evening for an Amazing Journeys Shabbat in our beautiful Icelandic surroundings and enjoy dinner together at our hotel’s wonderful restaurant. (B, D)
Saturday, June 7
This morning, start your day Icelandic-style with time at our gorgeous hotel’s sauna or hot tub, or taking in this unbelievable landscape before we depart for another exciting day. Our drive westward will show us beautiful views as we take in our scenic surroundings. Enjoy lunch at a wonderful restaurant where creativity drives the chef’s inspiration for modern Icelandic cuisine.
Skógafoss is one of the largest and most elegant waterfalls in Iceland. Due to the mist and amount of spray, the waterfall consistently produces a single or double rainbow on sunny days. An ancient folklore tells the tail of Þrasi, the first Viking settler in the area, who buried his chest of gold in a cave behind the waterfall. You’ll have the opportunity to climb the steep staircase for amazing views or walk to the foot of the falls.
The land of Fire & Ice lives up to its name as we visit the Lava Centre to learn about Iceland’s volcanos and earthquakes through interactive, high-tech displays of nature’s epic forces.
Later, follow the frolicking sheep to a small wool mill where the farm owners will show us around the farm and demonstrate how their spinning machines turn wool into the famous Icelandic yarn.
We’ll finish off our exciting and unique visit to Iceland with our Amazing Journeys Farewell and a truly Icelandic sendoff. Enjoy a Viking experience with typical Icelandic cuisine at a Viking Longhouse, styled after the traditional farmhouse built more than 1,100 years ago. Try your hand at axe-throwing to see how you would hold up in the Viking days! (B, L, D)
