Saturday, July 9
No visit would be complete without seeing Iceland’s Golden Circle. This morning, those on our two-night package will meet our local guide and embark on our 6-hour tour, beginning at Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Known as the Assembly Fields or Parliament Plains and situated about 30 miles east of Reykjavik, they were the first home of what has become one of the oldest parliamentary institutions in the world. Next we visit the Gullfoss Waterfall where glacial melt water cascades down into the deep and narrow Hvitargljufur Canyon. Regurning from Gullfoss, we visit the Geysir Hot Spring area where you’ll get to walk amidst hissing steam vents, sulfurous mud pots and get up close to an erupting geyser. If you are joining us for the one-night package, you will arrive today and have the day to explore the amazing city of Reykjavik. This evening, everyone will have the opportunity to enjoy one of the many restaurants and nightlife Reykjavik has to offer. With 24 hours of daylight at this time of year, you’ll feel like it’s the middle of the day, no matter how late you stay out! (B)
Sunday, July 10
This morning we’ll meet our local guide for a walking tour of Reykjavik. Weaving our way through narrow alleys framed with old timber houses, learn about the life of the Icelandic capital from its very beginning to the present day. Pass Hallgrimskirkja-Church, City Hall and Parliament building and Höfði House where the Reagan/ Gorbachev summit meeting took place in 1986. Then enjoy a panoramic view over Reykjavik, the fjord and mountains from the balcony at the Pearl, a glass hemisphere sitting atop six massive hot water tanks. After the tour, we’ll drive out to the world-famous Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most popular attractions, a natural geothermal pool in the middle of a large and dramatic lava field and an oasis that owes its existence to a nearby geothermal power plant, looming large over the aqua tinted waters. We stop for approximately 2 ½ hours for a refreshing soak or a swim in the inviting, rejuvenating and pleasantly warm mineral-rich water (36°C-38°C/100-110°F), reputed for its healing properties. An indoor pool and geothermal sauna are also on the site. Bathing in this surreal environment is a unique experience no one should miss. The Blue Lagoon’s warm water and natural active ingredients like mineral salts, silica and blue green algae help you relax and escape the stress and strain of daily life. After the visit, we’ll head to the cruise pier and arrive at our cruise ship, the MS Fridjof Nansen. (B)
