Tuesday, July 25 – Budapest, Hungary
Your tour begins with a short stop at Saint Stephan Park to see the statues of Raoul Wallenberg and Gabor Sztehlo, both credited with saving thousands of Hungarian Jews during WWII. Afterwards, you’ll take a tour of the Jewish District. We begin at the Dohany Street Synagogue, the second largest in the world. We’ll pause to see a lovely sculpture of a weeping willow tree where each silver leaf is engraved with the name of a Righteous Gentile who helped Jews escape during the Holocaust. This piece was given to the people of Hungary by her native son and film star, Tony Curtis. We explore the Old Jewish Quarter with its winding narrow streets which has now become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tour includes the Jewish Museum, the Temple of Heros and the Old Jewish Cemetery. We’ll make a stop to see the famous Shoes at the Danube – a simple but touching tribute to the many who lost their lives here. (B, L, D)
Wednesday, July 26 – Bratislava, Slovakia
This morning, enjoy a scenic cruise to Bratislava. Host to the crowning ceremonies of 11 Hungarian kings and queens between 1536 and 1830, Bratislava certainly has earned the title “Coronation City of Kings,” as you’ll discover during your walking tour. Our morning begins with a walking sightseeing tour of the Old Town Hall, Michael’s Gate and St. Martin’s Cathedral. Our Jewish Heritage tour continues with a viewing of the Holocaust Memorial before we board our mini-train to visit the tomb of Chatam Sofer, Bratislava’s most famous Rabbi and one of Europe’s most prominent Orthodox Rabbis. This evening is left free to enjoy Bratislava on your own. (B, L, D)
Thursday, July 27 – Vienna, Austria
This morning we arrive in Vienna, the “City of Waltzes” that offers a wealth of gems and the historic city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This morning, our Amazing Journeys tour will feature the Judenplatz and Jewish Quarter in Vienna’s 2nd District, also known as Leopoldstadt. We’ll visit inside the Museum Judenplatz, built atop the now-excavated ruins of a 15th century synagogue. Visit inside the Museum Dorotheergasse housed in the beautiful Palais (Palace) Eskeles which dates back to the 15th century and was once home to Mozart’s widow, Constance Weber. We’ll walk to Albertina Square to visit a monument against war and fascism. This afternoon you are on your own to further explore this iconic city, enjoying cafes and sampling Viennese coffee and pastries including the famous sacher torte. Walk past famous sites as the majestic Opera House and the former Imperial Palace of the Habsburgs. Return to the ship for dinner or enjoy the evening in Vienna, famous for it’s musical venues and cuisine. Later this evening, enjoy an optional concert in the “Music Capital of the World.” (B, L, D)
Friday, July 28 – Weissenkirchen, Austria – Melk, Austria – Grein, Austria
After reaching Weissenkirchen, you’ll be treated to several choices of excursions. Take a walking tour of Dürnstein before visiting the UNESCO-designated Melk Abbey. For a more culinary-focused experience, join a walking tour in Dürnstein, then enjoy a wine tasting hosted by a local vintner and sample special apricot treats from a local boutique. If you prefer a more active adventure, hike up to the fortress where Richard the Lionheart was once held or join a guided bike tour to Melk. Later in the day, sail through the Strudengau Valley to medieval Grein for an exclusive visit to the more than 500-year-old Greinburg Castle, looming regally from above. While here, enjoy a folklore show and wine reception. Back onboard the ship, we’ll celebrate Shabbat together with our Amazing Journeys group and enjoy a Shabbat dinner together. (B, L, D)
Saturday, July 29 – Linz – Salzburg – Linz, Austria
This morning the ship arrives in Linz, the second largest city in Austria. Your Jewish Heritage excursion begins at the Hauptplatz and a walking tour to the Linz Synagogue where we’ll visit inside. We’ll pass by Rathause, Model City which was the School of Hitler, see the residence of Kaltenbrunner / Eichmann and learn about Hitler’s family doctor, Mr, Bloch, a Jew. We’ll depart for Salzburg with a visit inside of the Salzburg Synagogue before transferring to the Salzburg City Center for free time and lunch on your own. Later, we’ll finish in Salzburg where you will take a walking tour of the historic center, famous as the setting for the “Sound of Music” and as the birthplace of Mozart. After, we’ll return to the ship. (B, L, D)
Sunday, July 30 – Passau, Germany – Vilshofen, Germany
Discover the city of Passau in one of three ways. Enjoy a walking tour and marvel at Gothic and Italian Baroque architecture and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Later, cruise to Vilshofen, where you will be treated to a festive Oktoberfest celebration— an AmaWaterways exclusive.
