Before we head to the south, we will continue our exploration of Madrid with a visit to the Royal Palace, stroll around the beautiful Plaza de la Armería and enjoy the surrounding gardens, Plaza Mayor which one of Madrid’s grandest squares, and Puerta del Sol, the lively center of the city. Pop into Mercado de San Miguel for some tapas or a snack full of Spanish flavors.
We will take the AVE fast train to Seville (2.5 hours). Welcome to Analucia! Upon arrival in Seville, we’ll make our way to the historic city center to explore the magnificent Seville Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. If you’re up for it, climb the Giralda Tower to take in panoramic views of the city. Tonight, we’ll take you for a must-do experience in Spain, to see a traditional Flamenco show, one of Spain’s most famous art forms. (B)
Sunday, November 16 – Seville – Cordoba – Seville
Today we will explore the city of Córdoba. Our adventure commences in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, where the past comes alive in the labyrinthine streets. As we navigate these charming alleys, we’ll be immersed in the stories of the resilient community that once thrived here. We’ll see the statue of Maimonides, on the square named for this famous Jewish philosopher, physician and astronomer, born in Cordoba during the 12th century. Next, we venture to the House of Sepharad, a living testament to the Sephardic heritage that left an indelible mark on Cordoba. We will delve into the legacy of the Jewish Diaspora through exhibits, artifacts, and engaging narratives. You’ll gain insights into the lives, culture, and contributions of the Sephardic community that once flourished in this city.
Next, the crown jewel of Córdoba awaits: the Mezquita, or Great Mosque-Cathedral. Step into a world where Islamic and Christian influences seamlessly blend. Marvel at the intricate arches, the hypnotic mihrab, and the transcendent beauty of this architectural masterpiece. We’ll also delve into the hidden gems of this enchanting city. Our journey will take us to the Courtyards of Cordoba, a UNESCO-recognized Intangible Heritage site, brimming with vibrant colors, charm, and lively atmosphere. We’ll partake in the art of Venenciar, which is a practice using a special tool, called a venencia, to skillfully draw samples of Sherry from the aging barrels in the cellars. (B).
Monday, November 17 – Seville – Granada – Seville
Nestled at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Granada is renowned for its crown jewel, the Alhambra, an exquisite palace and fortress complex that showcases stunning Islamic architecture and lush gardens. Explore the majestic Alhambra citadel with its collection of magical palaces, the only royal residences of an Islamic dynasty still standing since the Middle Ages. These buildings encode an image of the Garden of Eden and the beauty of the palaces of King Solomon.
Visit the lower part of Granada to explore the Jewish Quarter. Stroll through the Realejo neighborhood where Jews and Muslims lived through alternating periods of peace and conflict. The Jewish community remained in their ghetto until the arrival of the Christians, who, after the Conquest of Granada, expelled all Sephardic Jews from their village. The synagogue and main buildings were destroyed, and the neighborhood was repopulated with Christian settlers. The Realejo underwent a profound urban transformation after the departure of its Jewish community. Today, it is a cosmopolitan neighborhood where people from very different backgrounds coexist with long-time Granada residents. Wander through the Albaicín, Granada’s oldest and most emblematic neighborhood, before returning to Seville for the evening. (B)
Tuesday, November 18 – Seville
Today we will spend our day immersed in the beauty, architecture and history of Seville. Visit the most picturesque place in Seville, the Plaza de España with its colorful footbridges and curved building in the Regionalist style. Prepare to be transported back in time as we wander through the corridors of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Alcazar of Seville, a stunning palace complex which is renowned for its exceptional blend of architectural styles and its rich historical significance. You will be amazed by the intricate details of Moorish and Mudejar architecture that grace every corner, the opulence of the palace rooms, adorned with delicate tile work and ornate designs. After exploring the impressive palace, take a stroll through its beautiful gardens, which were featured in Game of Thrones.
Stroll across the Isabel II Bridge to an unmissable neighborhood of Triana, a district that was home to many sailors, gypsies, flamenco singers, and dancers, making it a lively neighborhood. Visit the market, located at the end of the bridge, where we will have an opportunity to taste some regional delicacies!
This evening, we’ll gather with our AJ friends for a group dinner together in Spain before saying our good-byes. (B, D)
