Mention Bali and thoughts of a paradise immediately come to mind. But it’s more than just a place, it’s a feeling, a state of mind and an aspiration. Bali’s natural charms and deep-rooted spirituality are present at every turn. Volcanoes rise up from the sea, monkeys swing playfully in trees and there are still secluded spots to escape the crowds. The diverse culture of Bali is obvious and almost everything has spiritual meaning, as showcased in some of the island’s estimated 10,000 temples. Ubud, the heart of Bali, is a place where the culture is most accessible while showcasing beautiful rice fields and ancient monuments. Our Balinese journey begins at Benoa Harbor shortly after our ship arrives this morning on the island of Bali in Indonesia. Our first visit will be to the Monkey Forest. This sacred forest sanctuary is a home for the tribe of grey-haired long-tailed macaque monkeys. Here, we are onlookers at this exceptional nature reserve and mysterious temple complex located in a dense jungle which provide the local villagers with a vital spiritual, economic and educational conservation center.
We’ll visit the Ubud Art Market, locally referred to as ‘Pasar Seni Ubud’ and known as the best art market in Bali. Here you can find locally made crafts and goods such as beautiful silk scarves, handmade woven bags, jewelry, baskets or hats, Balinese shirts, statues, kites and many other hand-crafted goods.
We’ll arrive at our luxurious boutique hotel this afternoon, giving you the opportunity to relax at the pool, enjoy a massage or walk in the hotels exotic gardens. (L, D)
Friday, January 5
This morning we drive to Gunung Kawi Temple, located on mystical Pakerisan River Valley in Tampak Siring Village. This archaeological complex is carved out of rock and dates back to the 11th century. Choose to walk down 300+ steps (or go by car) to reach the temple, passing by a lush jungle and the famous Balinese rice terraces. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting archeology.
Next, you’ll visit nearby Tirta Empul Temple to experience a small Balinese Hindu ritual of blessing and purification. This temple is famous for its holy spring water where Balinese worshipers have been drawn to for more than a thousand years. Those participating can put on a sarong, the local dress, and collect a small offering from your guide before meeting with the Hindu Priest who will lead the blessing ritual.
After, we’ll drive east of Ubud to visit Bedulu Village, the center of Pejeng Kingdom in the 10th-13th centuries. After a stop for lunch, we’ll visit The Elephant Cave, Goa Gajah, a significant Hindu archaeological site. Goa Gajah is locally known as the Elephant Cave because of its close proximity to the Elephant River. A mysterious cave, relics, and ancient bathing pools are set amid green rice paddies. The site is mentioned in the Javanese poem Desawarnana written in 1365. An extensive bathing place on the site was not excavated until the 1950s and appear to have been built to ward off evil spirits.
This evening, we’ll celebrate Shabbat, Balinese style, followed by a group dinner. (B, L, D)
Saturday, January 6
Enjoy some free time to relax this morning in our beautiful surroundings before we move to Nusa Dua. Here, we’ll stop for lunch (not included).
This afternoon, experience Uluwatu Temple. Located on the extreme southwestern tip of the island, this temple is one of Bali’s nine key cardinal temples. It is perched on the edge of a steep cliff some 70 meters above the roaring waves of the Indian Ocean. The temple is inhabited by a large number of monkeys.
This evening, enjoy a BBQ Dinner at Taman Surya Beachfront Garden where we’ve arranged for a private Kecak Dance performance. Kecak Dance describes the eternal love story of Rama and Shinta where Goddess Shinta was abducted by King Ravana which began the battle between the two forces. The a cappella music is generated from a combination sounds made by 50–70 people. (B, D)
